Pinoy Pop Music Of the Past
49Pinoy music nowadays is more on the remake side which pretty sucks since it has already progressed in the past decades. Filipinos are a bunch of talented people but sad to say, what lacks in our pop music scene is the incorporation of something new without recycling stuffs from the past and/or from the foreign acts of today. The point of this post? I don't know either. Heh. I just saw Jolina Magdangal's pre-nuptial pics with Mark Escueta and remembered my childhood when I decided to explore the music of that era and the era before that. Okay, before I enumerate the top pop songs of the past, I just wanna warn you that I am unleashing the jologs in me. So if you are a bit of a sosyal, don't blame me for some allergic attack because you've been forewarned.
Chuva Choo Choo - Jolina Magdangal (1997/1998)
I think I was in 1st or 2nd grade when this became a hit. She was one of the popular singers in my childhood along with Tootsie Guevarra and Roselle Nava. It's also funny that this was also the time when ABS-CBN used to show their music videos during siesta time. Haha. I was never a fan of hers but every time I hear this, it makes me wanna bop to the beat. Jolina was an icon in the 90s which I really find kinda weird nowadays.
Kapag Tumibok Ang Puso - Donna Cruz (1992)
Shananana shanana~ Ah! It's LSS-ing (is that even a word?). It's kinda amusing to know too that I'm only a 1-year-old baby when this song was released. Contemporary Pinoy artists like Toni Gonzaga and Pop Girls made their own version of this song.
Sayang Na Sayang - Manilyn Reynes (1990)
I wasn't even born when this song was released. By the way, she was hailed as the star of the decade because of her immense popularity then.
VST & Co. (1970s)
Oh my, I can't decide which of their songs should I post (hence, the two videos). I think they were a great band back then. I just love the disco-riffic sound! Plus, it reminds me of that cool and jazzy Manila. I don't think this would get old and every generation could appreciate it when in the mood to just dance. Even after 4 decades have passed, their song can still be heard on commercials and radios.
I think the 70s has been nice to the Pinoy music scene with legendary bands like Boyfriends and Hagibis coming out.
Urong Sulong - Regine Velasquez (1987)
I never thought that the Asia's song bird used to pull off an upbeat tune. I grew up listening to her belting out a ballad that's why I never thought she was the one who sang this song.
Okay, I was supposed to add other songs in this post but I realized that some of the songs were somewhat similar to ones I already featured. I also realized that as I create this article, that the Pinoy music scene is really rich. Thinking about the bands and artists before and the Pinoy rock scene today, I hope the youth of today will get to appreciate their own sound. I also wish that the Pinoy pop scene will stop recycling stuffs.
P.S. I promise, I will create another related post. Just wait for it.
